The usefulness of a gilet, or vest, was realized during my time spent south of the Mason-Dixon line in Savannah and Atlanta. Outerwear down South can vary from day to day with fall & winter weather often being cool or cold in the mornings with sometimes hot, sunny afternoons. For these situations, a proper piece of outerwear just became a burden that more often than not was carried underarm by the afternoon instead of being worn. Insert the Gilet. Now, sweaters like merino wool or lofty Shetland can be layered happily with these sleeveless garments and the gilet would ensure the core stayed warm while the warm southern air could breathe through the knits keeping us cool and comfortable. The gilet also fulfilled the need to layer just one last piece of clothing for the day before heading out the front door. Ever since, the gilet has been a mainstay in my wardrobe and should be a welcome one in yours, too.
